Konkombe – The Nigerian Pop Music Scene (1979) is a film by groundbreaking British documentarian, Jeremy Marre (1949 – 2021) which is having 3 showings at @riocinema in mid October.
The film was part of Beats of the Heart, a 14-part award-winning music documentary series initially shown on British television and later on public television in the United States. The film won awards at Cannes and came to influence David Byrne and Paul Simon, and many other artists of the time, interested in non-Western music. Paul Simon first learned of Ladysmith Black Mambazo through Rhythm of Resistance, another film in the series, and which eventually led to Graceland.
In Konkombe – The Nigerian Pop Music Scene, Marre makes a deepdive into the incredible music being made in Nigeria in the late 70s, fueled by the hugely influential Festac 77 festival, two years prior. It stars Fela, King Sunny Ade, and most notably, The Lijadu Sisters, with their young children in tow and often surrounded by all-male musicians and producers, as they try to get their ideas across.
